Why do customer service people talk on their cell phones while working?

Question by mm06840: Why do customer service people talk on their cell phones while working?
I was at a store today, the clerk talked on his cell phone while he rang up my purchase. Last time I got a haircut, the stylist took a personal non emergency call on her cell phone..while cutting my hair!! I started to get up, angrily saying”I will wait for you to finish your call” She quickly hung up, apologized, and gave me a bagful of free samples when I left. It seems mostly younger people do this, but I am young and I think its soooo rude. It has also happened before. The teller at the bak was talking on her cell phone while she served customers, etc. Has anyone else noticed this? Or is it only in certain areas of the country?

Because the world today does not now the word respect to one another. When I was a manager in retail and seen one of my employees talk on the phone and not helping I told them once to hang up are else be written up, it is only respect to the customers, that word is gone, it is a shame

Your right, it is rude. Most companies ban non emergency phone calls at work. It effects productivity. The stylist who cut your hair? She quickly hung up, apologized and gave you a bag of free samples so you wouldn’t complain to her boss.

The people you speak of can’t seperate personal life from professional life.

These are the type of people that are at work just to survive and not really there to assist in getting the job done.

More and more people loathe going to work and would much rather sit at home and veg or hang out with friends. Their lives consist of a continuous cycle of drama which serves to stimulate them in some way or another, which continues the “high school” phase of their lives. These people are most likely to be young, non-collegate bound dead enders who will work remedial positions until they realize there’s more to life or they take on some form of negative stimulation like heroin. These people will eventually get bored become “born again” and have a family so their kids can repeat the cycle. After that they will become seriously depressed and place all their hopes on their children who will of course hate them.

Yes, I’ve noticed this too. I disagree with the first answer — we all have lives, and you don’t see the majority of us talking on our cell phones on the job! I think these clerks are dissatisfied with their jobs, bored, unchallenged and just don’t care. So they talk on the phone to fill up their time. They’re just being selfish and inconsiderate.

If I am paying another person 100 percent for a service, I expect them to give me 100 percent of their attention and effort. If they want to take a call, that’s fine…as long as they are willing to give me a discount for the “shared” attention.

Of course, this goes both ways. I think it’s just as disrespectful for a customer to be on a cell phone when dealing with a clerk. It sends a subtle message of “you’re not important.” I think a clerk has every right to say, “I’ll be happy to help you when you’re done with your call” and to make them step aside so others can be served.

Because they’re idiots! It works the other way around too. I hate it when I am at work and someone leaves to answer their phone for a bull$ hit call and I’m left to work alone. I think that cell phones should be banned from places of business where the employees deal directly with customers. You are not getting paid to talk on the phone!
